Must-Avoid Errors to Perfect Spikes

Nothing is as exciting as spiking a volleyball.  A setter throws the ball up in the air, then a hitter or a spiker expectedly gets in position to achieve elevation to powerfully send the ball towards the opposing team’s side.  If properly done, the ball smashed should arrive to the opponents with power and swiftness impossible to return or even dig.  A successful hit can send the crowd roaring with excitement, cheering the spiker’s name or team.

If you are volleyball player and want to perfect your spike, you came to the right page.  Listed below are common spike errors you must avoid to improve your volleyball game.

Not Wrist Snapping

Wrist snapping generates power from the wrist to hit the ball with pinpoint accuracy and bad intentions.  It is done by bending the wrist when hitting the ball.  If you do not manage to snap your wrist when you hit, the ball will curve up and goes out.

Here’s some exercise tips to improve wrist snapping.  Strengthen your wrist by placing a  weight plate attached to a rope with handle.  Hold the handle and lift your arm straight in front up to your shoulder level.  Turn the handle to wind the rope while pulling the weight up.   Do this exercise in three sets of twelve repetitions.

Improper Positioning

Correct timing and positioning can set up a successful spike.  When you jump and swing with the ball behind your head, you won’t be able to deliver an effective hit.  The attempt can either go out or deflected back.  A good hit should contact the ball high and in your line of vision.

Let your coach supervise you during drills.  Allow him to film you as you hit your spike.  Watch and take note of your errors.  The next time you attempt the move, you’ll be able to position and time your hit correctly.
