Making Healthier Choices in Preparing Soup

In today's modernized society, convenience and time is key. Time is of the essence when choosing meals at home. If you are particular with  choosing meals with a few simple ingredients, you may opt for broth-based or cream-based soups with a small amount of garnishing such as vegetables, mushrooms, chives or meat bits. When you are pressed with time, there are easy-to-prepare recipes that can be done in a short time. If you are pressed with both time and convenience, commercially-prepared soups are also available. However, it is also important that the dishes which are prepared are healthy for you and your family.

It is important that you watch every food that you take into your body. So, here are some of the things you should watch out before planning out your soup dish:

Sodium Content

Sodium is a mineral that is helpful in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, helping in nerve impulses, and maintaining an adequate pH level in blood. However, when consumed in excess amounts, sodium can become dangerous to your health. Sodium's negative effects include heart complications, hypertension, fluid retention, and kidney disease. That's why when choosing processed soups, you should check the label for sodium content. Your serving of soup must not exceed 350 mg or 50% or recommended daily intake of sodium.

Fat Content

If you are opting for cream-based soups, check the ingredients for fat and calorie content. If you are watching your weight, choose low-fat milk or cream as your soup base. Also use lean meats instead of fatty portions which can be a source of bad cholesterol.

Added Nutrients

If possible, opt for tomato or vegetable-based broths when preparing a soup dish, which are low in calories and fat, but with added nutrients like vitamins and minerals. If you are opting for pasta or noodles in your soup, make sure they have at least 5 grams of protein and 3 grams of dietary fiber.

A healthier you starts with the food you eat. In the case of soups, its your headstart dish of the day to keep yourself fit.
